“Everyone dies.” She stares at the quasi-immortal dog Kami. “Well, almost everyone” she gives a small smile.
“Even if people are afraid of dying, at some point humans just….have to die, we all accept that in some way. But to be forgotten? To be made to dissapear? That is much more terrifying. To make your time on the living world truly feel inconsequential”
“I remember some people talking about a ‘second death’ when ya forgotten…but burning ya house down and wiping ya records doesn’t make the world forget about you. We make a bigger imprint than that.
Even when every spirit ya met passes on, the earth will remember.”
She gives a small smile. “Perhaps that can be enough for those who are left.”
Or perhaps not, she thought. But would rather not voice out.
“A dead body gives the family and friends of the deceased some closure. Even in cases where they know the body has been lost in an area, like the sea or it’s been burnt to ashes, that’s still a form of finality”
“But to make someone disappear? That is a form of torture that never ends for those close to the victim. Even if logic dictates that they must clearly have been killed, the emotional part of the brain still clings to hope, still has the open wound that they might reappear”
“I’ve met mothers who had their sons missing for 30 years. And even then, some still hoped they’d come back home to them somehow. or at the very least know what happened to them. That hope…that was the true torture.”

“Killed essentially, but it’s taking it one step further. You are taken, killed, and they erase any trace that you existed. Meaning that your house is burnt down, archives of you are suspiciously gone, and even people start to fear talking about you because others might attack them next”
She leans back.
“It is a horrible punishment the Chem barons had inflected on those unfortunate enough to have crossed them in a major way.”
